Contact Stephen McNair

Stephen was elected as Political Education Officer at the 14th November 2020 AGM. Previously he had been co-opted at the 10 October 2020 general meeting to serve pro tempore in that role until  we could hold the AGM. Stephen was relected at teh July 2021 AGM.

Stephen McNair first joined the Labour Party in 1970, but has been more active since he retired from full time work in 2010, and he was Chair of Broadland CLP for a year. He began his career as a teacher in FE, the Open University and the WEA, moved into local government and then to NGOs working on policy issues in post-school education and the labour market. Since 2005 his main work has been in age policy. Politically he is particularly interested in electoral reform and welfare reform, including the idea of a Universal Basic Income

He says:

I have always been interested in political education, in how public policy is made and implemented, and how political education can help build a fairer society. Support for the 1945 Labour government, which transformed Britain for the good, was built on a massive public education campaign through the second half of the war. A democratic society needs an educated electorate, who understand the complexities of the issues, and can contribute to shaping our Party’s policies. I would like, as Political Education Officer to contribute to educating ourselves, to educating our communities and to shaping Party thinking.

The political education officer role description is:

Host educational meetings during the year. Work with Policy Officer on guest speakers at the discussion meetings/general meetings. Advertise training opportunities for the CLP, whether arranged, locally, regionally or nationally. Be able to explain and teach on how the Party operates, particularly to new members. Organise events for councillors etc to speak to explain what a councillor does and how to be involved. Organise training events on how to campaign.
