Constituency Equality and Diversity Officer
Cheryl was co opted as our Disability Officer in February 2020, and elected to that post at the 14 November 2020 Annual General meeting.
I’d like to introduce myself as the Disability Officer for Broadland Constituency Labour Party (CLP). I’m Mum to an incredible young lad with ASD and complex needs. Fighting a daily battle to get access to the services he desperately needs and deserves in a system that is in crisis due to ten years of Tory austerity is heartbreaking and beyond exhausting.
Now, more than ever, it’s time to challenge this devastating social inequality and injustice – things have got to change!
I’ve set up a forum online so that members of our CLP who identify as disabled, carers and parent carers can meet in a safe space and connect. It’s a chance to discuss what we need to do firstly within Broadland Labour Party to make sure our voices are heard and we have equality of access to meetings, social events, campaigns and can influence policy formation.
It’s also for us to share issues and concerns about what is happening in the constituency and to talk about what we can actively do to make a change now for our children and people with disabilities and their carers. I’m sure there are many issues within the county to discuss such as the cuts to the Minimum Income Guarantee (MIG) and nationally in terms of lack of funding for mental health provision.
I’m excited about what we can achieve together with our Broadland CLP comrades and hope that if you are a member who identifies as disabled, a carer or parent carer you will head over to Broadland CLP Members Disability Forum today to get involved in the conversation!
