The Unite Norfolk Community Branch has been running a project in Mile Cross to supply packed lunches during school holidays for children who otherwise would be going hungry. Many children rely on the food provided at school and this leads to hunger during holidays.
The next project is the coming summer holiday when the aim is to provide at least 800 meals costing around £1500. If this target is achieved then 2000 lunches will have been provided from the time the project began last summer. There is still £300 needed to meet the cost.
This is not only a lunches project. The Mile Cross area has been leafleted extensively and local schools have been involved to help build an ongoing relationship between the Labour Party, the unions and the local community. The response from teachers and parents has been positive and a large amount of the money needed has been raised, but there is still around £300 short for the summer project.
Unite is seeking to include in Labour’s Manifesto the commitment to extend school meals into the holidays, and or, increase benefits to parents to compensate them for the loss of these meals.
