Subject: NEC CLP Nominations
Hope you are well.
My name is Shama Tatler and I am writing to you to let you know that I am seeking CLP nominations for the NEC elections in the CLP division.
I am standing in the NEC election because it is an important moment for the party to return a governing body that not only supports Keir and looks at how we get back to winning elections; but also a governing body that reflects our party and communities. A governing body that understands good governance and the challenges ahead.
If elected to the NEC I want to improve participation, training and tolerance in our party and will support learning every possible lesson from our past to ensure that we can all go forward together; united in common cause of securing the next Labour Government.
I am currently a Councillor and Cabinet member at Brent Council and have previously been the Brent North CLP chair. In addition, I have been the Vice-Chair of Governors of a primary school and also was an executive member for a Childrens’ cultural organisation. Previous to being a councillor I was a secondary school History teacher.
My priorities will be –
- Supporting our CLPs to help Labour Win
Covid has changed the way we work and communicate and as such as a party we need to support CLPs to embrace the changes. There currently is a huge disparity in the resources of different CLPs. If we are truly going to get back into government we need to support CLPs in ALL seats. This is so important so we can work on winning every vote to get Keir into No 10 as well as electing every possible Cllr, Mayor and PCC.
- Unity, culture and confidence
The party and all its structures need to be a safe and united space. We should always welcome a broad spectrum of views and ideas. Bullying, harassment and discrimination should never be tolerated. Neither should we be in denial about the experiences some of our members and councillors have faced. I welcome mandatory unconscious bias training but there also needs to be more.
-Work to implement then monitor an independent complaints process as well as any recommendations by the EHRC
-I will prioritise mandatory training in safeguarding and sexual harassment.
Look at ways to resource better mental health provision/support at all levels of the party.
- Representation and Inclusion
I believe that the party’s values have to be demonstrated and not just something we talk about. Equality of opportunity and inclusivity are areas that we must do better on within all our party structures. We cannot truly represent and understand the communities we want to serve if we do not reflect those communities.
- Transparency and accountability
My experience on executive committees and governing bodies has given me insight and skills in good governance. Robust discussion, constructive challenge, collective decision making, reviewing and monitoring policy, as well communication with the wider membership is vital.
I will commit to feeding back to CLPs through updates and meeting CLPs.
