Subject: Michael Payne for Labour’s NEC
Dear CLP Secretary,
I am writing to ask Broadland CLP to consider nominating me as one of the nine nominations you can make for the CLP section of the NEC.
Please find below my CV, which I hope you will circulate to your members.
If you have not already met, would you mind letting me know the date when your CLP will be holding its online meeting to take this decision? It would also be useful to know if you are not going to be nominating or what the outcome was if you have already met.
If you have already nominated I have still included you in this email as some CLPs may want copies of CVs to circulate at the OMOV stage.
There is a PDF of my leaflet attached to this email for your CLP members too.

▪️Michael believes Labour needs to be united, radical and determined to win power to change our country for the better.
▪️Michael is Nottinghamshire born & bred. He is the grandson of a miner and was brought up in a rented terrace house by his parents who both took up apprenticeships after leaving school. His father was an apprentice mechanic and has spent his life working in the public sector and his mother was an apprentice hairdresser. Thanks to the policies and support of a Labour government, he was the first person in his family to ever go to university. His experience growing up has driven him to spend his life campaigning for people to have the best possible education, opportunities and chances in life, irrespective of their background or where they were born.
▪️Michael has been a Labour Party member, activist and union member for 15 years and has campaigned in election after election over two decades in his home constituency of Gedling – one of the most marginal seats in the country. He is councillor on both Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council and sees first-hand the devastating damage the Tories are doing to local communities. That’s why he wants to support Keir in campaigning for a radically transformative Labour Government and more Labour councillors in every corner of the country.
▪️Michael champions our activists and councillors across the country as the cornerstone of our movement and the best way to get Labour into government and Keir into Number 10. He will ensure the party is there to support Labour councils as they recover from Covid-19 and continue to battle austerity.
▪️As a local councillor, as national deputy leader of Labour in local government in England & Wales and as chair of the Local Government Information Unit, he has wealth of experience running and leading democratic organisations and working with Labour activists, campaigners and representatives from across the country. He will ensure the rights of members and workers are upheld, while holding our national officers to account. In order to support Keir’s pledge of unity Michael will give all members from each tradition a voice by visiting CLPs across the country and reporting back after every NEC meeting.
▪️Michael is committed to making our party structures as diverse as our entire country, he will always stand up for greater representation of women, BAME, disabled and LGBT+ members at all levels of politics. Michael was one of the first openly gay deputy council leaders and worked with LGBT+ Labour to establish LGBT+ Labour Councillors Network as is serving as the inaugural chair. In 2019 he worked with colleagues & friends from the trans community to organise and facilitate the first ever Be A Councillor training session specifically for the trans community.
▪️He knows how to beat the Tories and loves doing it! Overturned a Conservative majority of 173 to secure a Labour majority of 302 in St. Mary’s ward, Gedling, where he was born & brought up; and overturned a Conservative majority of 1,296 to secure Labour majority of 79 in Arnold North division on Nottinghamshire County Council.
▪️He was Labour’s Parliamentary candidate in the 2014 Newark by-election, he was backed by the FBU, GMB, Unison and USDAW, substantially increasing Labour’s share of the vote between 2014 and the 2015 General Election.
Unity – giving all members from all traditions a voice in how we put Labour back on a winning path toward Government and Keir in Number 10
Diversity – campaigning for greater representation for women, BAME, disabled and LGBT+ members at all levels in our party
Campaigning – for a radically transformative Labour Government and more Labour councillors in every corner of the country
Accountability – I’ll stand up for the rights of members and workers, hold national officers to account, visit CLPs nationwide and report back after every NEC meeting
