Subject: Why I am seeking your CLP’s nomination
Mish Rahman for NEC
CLP Secretaries are the unsung heroes of the Party, often dedicating significant time and energy to ensure local members are kept informed about key meetings, events, and campaigning sessions. Thank you for all you do to keep our movement strong.
I am writing this email to ask for Broadland CLP to consider nominating me to become a member of Labour’s National Executive Committee for Division III, CLP section.
Like every member and CLP officer, I am committed to strengthening our party’s presence across all of our communities, building the structures to allow our party to campaign and win at every level of government – locally, regionally and nationally.
As an NEC member I will fight for our shared values to form a robust response to the Coronavirus crisis in these three areas:
For a Green New Deal
Faced with the threat of climate collapse, we’ve got no time to waste. By 2030 we need to create a zero-carbon economy that works for the vast majority of society, not the billionaires.
For an economy for the many, not the few
Our rigged system is in crisis. Right now, falling profits for the billionaires means catastrophic unemployment for us. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There is massive public support for transformative socialist policies that can create the future we need.
For liberation and equality
Our movement must join with Black Lives Matter in the fight for systemic change. We will take on the political elites who try and use racism and prejudice as weapons to turn us against one another. We will make sure our party is unified in the fight against racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, Afrophobia, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, ableism, sexism, sexual harassment, and the scapegoating of migrant and Traveller communities.
As one of the first graduates of Labour’s Bernie Grant Leadership programme to empower more BAME people to stand for elected positions, I decided to stand for election to the NEC to ensure:
- A strong voice for Party members on the NEC, and greater oversight over the governance of our Party.
- Political education and development for members.
- That the NEC reflects the diversity of our Party and stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.
- Strengthened organisations representing equalities groups in our party.
- Support for policies to deliver the future we need, which are overwhelmingly popular with the public: a Green New Deal, public ownership, a just welfare system, rolling back privatisation of the NHS, repealing anti-trade union laws, advancing migrants’ rights, and international solidarity.
As a working-class man of Bangladeshi heritage, whose father campaigned with the Anti-Nazi League in the 1980s against the National Front, I have always been a committed anti-racist activist. I’m CLP Chair in Aldridge-Brownhills and I’m an experienced Labour campaigner in the West Midlands.
I will stand in solidarity with the entire LGBTQ community in proudly demanding their rights, including trans rights. Labour must continue its support for reforming the Gender Recognition Act and stand up to the Tories’ attempts to fuel prejudice against the trans community.
These commitments depend on a party that can win. Over the next four years we must democratise and professionalise our party, so members are empowered at every level and have the support they need to organise and win. We need an NEC that can end the infighting at the top of the party, bring all parts of our movement together and stand united in our opposition to the Tories, both at the despatch box and on the picket line.
I hope Broadland CLP will consider supporting me. It would also be fantastic if you could let my campaign know the details of your nomination meeting by responding to this email or emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Finally, if you or your constituency members have any questions or queries about my candidacy, please drop me an email on reply. Additionally, please consider supporting Gemma Bolton, Nadia Jama, Yasmin Dar, Ann Henderson and Laura Pidcock in your nomination meetings.
