Subject:                         Why I’m seeking your CLPs nomination for Deputy Leader

Dear Philip,

I am writing to you as CLP secretary regarding Labour’s deputy leadership election to ask for your support.

I want to highlight why I am the best person to help unite the party, win back disaffected Labour supporters, animate our base and lead the fightback to government. Our communities cannot afford another decade of a Tory government.

My primary focus as Deputy Leader is to be a bit like John Prescott – only without punching anyone!

I will be a campaigning Deputy Leader ensuring we prepare our party for power. I will ensure we have paid organisers working with councillors, former MPs, MEPs, Trade Unions, Police & Crime Commissioners and Mayors at the heart of communities, including those rural areas and towns we recently lost, across the country. I will hit the ground running and have the experience to take on the Tories from day one.

So many candidates are talking about unity. They may talk the talk, but I’ve walked the walk on unity.

I have served under two Labour Prime Ministers and proudly served in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet. I never have, and never will be part of a coup because divided parties do not win elections. Any MP not advocating for a Labour government should be suspended from the party.

Now I want to serve the membership implementing my C.O.R.E strategy – Campaign, Organise, Recruit and Educate. Under my deputy leadership this will be the last time we lose. All members will have access to the training and resources they need to lead the fightback across every part of the country.

We must now take community activism to the next level.

As Deputy Leader, I will amplify your voice in the Labour Party.

Members are the lifeblood of our party and I will ensure that the voice of members is front and centre in the debates and discussions that take place.

The Leader and Deputy must work together to deliver a Labour government. I understand the pressures of being in government as the first elected black woman in the UK to be a Minister. That inclusivity and experience is vital in Labour’s top team.

As Deputy Leader, I will ensure we have the right strategy, vision and a plan to prepare for power. I have the experience to lead the party to election victory.

In Solidarity,

Dawn Butler MP
