For European elections, the UK is divided into 11 regional constituencies, with each party putting forward a list of candidates for each region. The East of England is represented by 7 MEPs.

Voters have one vote to elect all of the MEPs for their region, voting for a party list (or for an individual candidate standing as an independent).

The number of MEPs that are elected from each party to represent the region depends on the overall share of votes that each party receives.

A note on Campaign expenditure

It is essential to ensure that the Party is in a position to fully comply with the Electoral Commission’s rules on campaign spending in regards to the European Parliamentary elections.

During the regulated period which ends at close of poll on 23 May, spending on campaign activity that promotes the party in a general way, or promotes our list of candidates must only be incurred by individuals authorised by the General Secretary. All authorised expenditure must also be recorded for inclusion in a detailed spending return that the party must deliver to the Electoral Commission after the election. Given the short timescales involved in this campaign, it will regrettably not be possible for the General Secretary to individually authorise CLPs to incur campaign expenditure for the European Elections, nor put in place appropriate mechanisms to properly record expenditure at a local level for inclusion in the party’s spending return after the election.

This means that in order for the Party to comply with our legal responsibilities, individual CLPs will not be able to independently incur spending on campaign materials that promote the party generally or material to promote the party or our candidates at the European Elections, save for the exception set out below.

Members are still able to make use of materials available in the campaign shop as expenditure on this material can be fully accounted for by the Party.
